Internal linking tools

Internal linking tools, and how each one picks the page to link from.

Every tool here suggests internal links. They differ in what decides which page links where, and in how much they insert on your live site before a person reads it. Here are seven.

Internal links

What an internal linking tool does, in one paragraph.

An internal linking tool finds places where one page on your site should link to another, and usually picks the anchor text too. Google uses links to find pages and as a relevance signal, and its guidance is that good anchor text is descriptive and relevant to both pages. The tools split on two questions: what decides which page links where, and whether the link goes live before anyone reads it.

Side by side

Seven tools, and what each one inserts without you.

The first column is how the tool chooses a link. A crawl matches words on your pages, a third-party estimate matches the keywords it thinks you rank for, and your own Search Console matches the searches Google actually shows each page for.

Tool How it picks the link What it does without you Price
Link Whisper Suggests links inside the WordPress editor while you write, with the anchor text picked. With Auto Linking on, it adds links for you. Links are written to your WordPress database and stay if you cancel. $97/year for 1 site, $197 for 3, $297 for 10, $497 for 50.
LinkBoss Reads every page with language processing, finds related pages and writes the anchor text. Inserts up to 2,000 links per batch. You can run it fully automated or review every link pair first. Free plan for 1 site. Credits are spent only when links are inserted.
LinkStorm Suggests links you accept one by one, with apps for WordPress, Shopify and Wix. With auto-linking on, it adds links across the site with no manual input. You can review and remove them afterwards. From $30/mo for 1,000 URLs.
InLinks Links pages by the entities (people, products, concepts) each one is about. Inserts links in your body text through one line of JavaScript, managed from its dashboard. From US$49/mo for 100 pages.
Ahrefs Link opportunities in Site Audit: takes each page's top 10 keywords by Ahrefs' traffic estimate and finds other pages that mention them. Nothing. It lists the page to link from, the keyword and the page to link to, and you add the link. Site Audit is included in Ahrefs Free.
Screaming Frog Crawls the site and counts the internal links pointing at every URL, plus a 0-100 Link Score. Nothing. It reports the counts and you decide where links go. Free up to 500 URLs. GBP 199/year per user.
QueryScope For each search you chose to win, the pages your own Search Console shows already rank for that subject and earn clicks. Nothing. It checks each source page for an existing link, your coding agent adds the link in your repo, and the change is measured from Google's recrawl. $49/mo for 1 site, $99 for 3, $149 for 10. Nothing metered.

Which kind of linking do you need first?

01 While you write

Your site runs on WordPress and you want links offered as you publish.

Link Whisper. The suggestions sit in the editor next to the post, and a click accepts one.

02 In bulk

You have thousands of pages and want them linked in one pass.

LinkBoss or LinkStorm. Both insert links at scale on WordPress and Shopify, and LinkStorm adds Wix. Decide first whether you review each link or let the batch run.

03 By topic

You think in topics and want links drawn from what each page is about.

InLinks. It reads the entities on each page and places the links through a script, so they live in InLinks rather than in your templates.

04 From an audit

You want a list of links to add and will add them yourself.

Ahrefs Link opportunities names source, keyword and target from a crawl. Screaming Frog shows which URLs receive the fewest links, which is where a page goes missing.

05 For the searches you want to win

Your site is a codebase and you want links that move a search you chose.

QueryScope starts from the search, not the page. It names the pages Search Console already credits for that subject, so the link carries real clicks and a relevant anchor, and your agent adds it through a commit you review.

How each change is measured

How many links

More links help a page up to a point.

In Zyppy's study of 23 million internal links across 1,800 sites, URLs receiving 0 to 4 internal links averaged 2 clicks from Google, and URLs receiving 40 to 44 averaged about four times that. Past about 45 to 50 links pointing at one URL, the effect reversed. Varied anchor text tracked traffic more closely than the raw count. Google sets no ideal number of links for a page, so count the links coming in, not the links going out.

If the links should serve the searches you chose, try it on one site.

Add the server to your IDE with the line below, then authorize Search Console in the browser that opens.

install.sh
claude mcp add --transport http queryscope https://mcp.queryscope.dev/mcp

Works the same in Cursor, Cline and Windsurf. Your IDE opens a browser once to authorize.

Then ask: “which pages should link to this one?”

FAQ

Internal linking tools: common questions.

What is an internal linking tool?

Software that finds where one page on your site should link to another and suggests the anchor text. Some insert the links for you, through a plugin, an app or a script. Others hand you a list and you add the links yourself.

Is there a free internal linking tool?

Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs for free and counts the links pointing at each one. LinkBoss has a free plan on one site, and Ahrefs includes Site Audit in Ahrefs Free.

Should an internal linking tool add links automatically?

Automatic insertion saves the most time on a large site. It also puts links live that nobody read, with anchors chosen by the tool. LinkBoss and LinkStorm let you choose between reviewing each link and letting the batch run.

How many internal links should a page have?

Google says there is no ideal number of links on a page. The evidence that exists is about links pointing at a page: in Zyppy's study, traffic rose with incoming internal links up to about 45 to 50 and fell after that.

Which internal linking tool fits a site that is a codebase?

One that works through the repo, so each link is a reviewed, versioned change like any other code. For tools sorted by where they run, see SEO tools for developers.

Is QueryScope connected to any of these companies?

No. QueryScope is independent and not affiliated with Google or any tool on this page. It reads your own Search Console over a read-only grant you approve and can revoke.

Link from the pages Google already credits.
